An Ojibwa-Odawa, Bell prefers to identify himself as an Anishanabe, An Ojibwa word for North America meaning literally "from whence man was lowered". Leland has been painting professionally since 1976 and in addition to his painting devotes much of his energy to creative writing and music. He has collaborated often with Shirley Chee Choo and her partner Blake Debassige on writing music for Shirley's film projects. | ||||||||||

| At an early age Roy was able to see the stories his grandparents told him. Inspired by other artists in the Woodlands style, including Norval Morrisseau, and counseled by elders in the area, Roy Thomas painted the visions of his people. Roy passed away in 2004 after a courageous battle with cancer. | |||||||||||

Brian Marion |
In 1975, Brian
Marion began a nine year apprenticeship with Norval Morrisseau, considered
to be the Father of the Canadian Woodland Aboriginal style of art. According
to Morrrisseau, "during those years of training, Brian learned both the
spiritualism of the Ojibway culture and the techniques of Shaman art." Born in 1960 in Kamsack, Saskatchewan, Brian grew up amongst the Saulteaux and Cree of the Prairies and the Ojibway people of Northwestern Ontario. |

| I paint life in the bush
north of Lake Superior as it was almost sixty years ago. Because I view the
world through female eyes, most often my imagery reflects the lives of women
and children going about their day to day routines. |

| Robert has lived all his life in Sandy Lake, Ontario, a Swampy Cree (Ojibway) First Nation community. He continues the Woodland Aboriginal tradition started by Norval Morrisseau, his cousin the late Carl Ray, and brothers Joachim and Goyce Kakegamic. His depiction of wildlife inhabiting his area of the universe is vividly monochromatic and his signature huge yellow eyes readily identify his work. Robert also brings an imaginative, but clear cut imagery to his paintings of the life of his people. |

| Norval Morriseau was arguably the most
important artist, native or otherwise, that Canada has ever produced. He was
also one of Canada's most internationally known artists. Morriseau was the first to paint his people's cultural heritage, faithfully handed down by oral tradition. As a result of his work, the Woodland Indian school of art evolved. He was the sole originator of the style. Norval was the first Native artist in the United States as well as Canada to paint in that unique style. Morrisseau was appointed Grand Shaman of the Ojibwa in 1986 and awarded the eagle feather at the Assembly of First Nations in 1995. He passed away in December 2007. |
